The Iron Gates

The Iron Gates lie between the Serbian Carpathians and the Banat Mountains. Until the Iron Gate I power station was completed in 1972, this stretch was especially dangerous for navigation.

At the Kazan Gorge between Orșova and Donji Milanovac, the Danube narrows to around 160 metres. Protected natural areas now extend along both banks.

The Tabula Traiana is one of the region’s most important Roman monuments. Emperor Trajan had it carved into the rock to commemorate the construction of the Roman road.

Nearby Lepenski Vir is an important Mesolithic archaeological site. The region combines dramatic nature with thousands of years of European history.
